Even a downpour didn’t stop Riverside Academy’s Class 3 from venturing out to explore the newly landscaped Saltmarsh Garden last Wednesday afternoon. Gateshead Project Officer Clare Ross was on hand to give us a tour. Pupils looked at different habitats across the site, discovered mini-beasts and talked about the part played by insects in the food chain.
We looked at where different animals might live; on the River Teams, in the Saltmarsh, on the river banks and in the woodland. Clare showed us where the ecology team had constructed dens for various wildlife, to give them shelter during the winter months – these are called hibernaculum.
With thanks to Miss Welsh and all of Class 3 pupils who braved the rain!
